New Resident Checklist

Welcome to Fort St. John! Whether you’re just arriving or getting organized after the move, this checklist brings together helpful information, local services, and next steps to support your transition into your community.

Set up your essentials

Moving here from outside of British Columbia

  • Apply for your B.C. Services Card and Medical Services Plan (MSP)

  • Exchange your driver’s licence and register your vehicle in B.C.

  • Set up utilities for electricity, gas, water and internet

  • Register for garbage collection and recycling

  • Find a family doctor or dentist accepting new patients

  • Register children in school or child care

  • Update your address with banks, insurance and government services

Prepare for northern living

  • Check if your vehicle has a block heater! If not, look into getting one installed. Stock up on winter gear such as boots, mitts, base layers, parka, snow brush and emergency kit

  • Learn local snow-clearing and parking rules

  • Get familiar with winter driving and check weather updates

  • Visit the Visitor Centre for trail maps and seasonal event info
